How to install and upgrade Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 GT-P7500 to Official Android ICS 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich

This method is called manual flashing by using Odin downloader and the original stock firmware, for we can’t upgrade to it yet via Kies unless we’re in Italy. This procedure is  for advance users only that still currently runs with official stock 3.2 HoneyComb, typical users may only upgrade thru Kies and may not try this method if do not truly understand of what this stuff is all about.

Update: For those who currently runs with a custom ROM, you should return back your device to official HC stock firmware first before directly installing this stock ROM, to get rid of issues like bootloops, display flickering and battery fast draining problem. Ensure that the original kernel is already installed on your phone’s system. Then you may need to perform wipe data/factory reset to clear the device memory cache before flashing.

Disclaimer: We shall not be held responsible if anything happens to your device by following this guide. Proceed at your own risk.

Important!

– Back up all important files before proceeding. Although the Internal memory and microSD card are both left alone during after the flash process for this firmware is a non wipe version. But all your settings and configuration will all be reset. So, be sure to have a back up all of it for safety.
– Fully recharge your phone’s battery.

  1. If you are not familiar with flashing firmware, you can re-search more about this method to gather more infos and any related issues. Again, this method is for advance users only. I always suggest you must wait and only update thru Kies.

  2. When I plug my galaxy tab 10.1 gt p7500 in Odin3_v1.85, the ID:COM box does not turn yellow. I use all the usb port of my computer, my tab still cannot connect to the odin. (I already installed the samsung usb drivers, kies just update my tab to 3.2)what else can I do to connect my tab to odin?

    1. I have the same problem with connection to ODIN, but I found solution:
      1. When TAB is in state DOWNLOADING and showing robot (after combination of power and volume down) connect TAB to computer. ODIN still can’t find TAB. Now press volume up – on screen you see warning about unknown OS. Accept warning by once again UP volume. Now ODIN find connection without any problems. I have TAB with ver. 3.2 Android.

  3. Battery drain problem, losing 1% per hour in flightmode: Wifi off, 3G off, Display off. Bug! Tried everything. The device won’t stay in sleep mode.
So bad. Let us wait for months and this is the result?
Some late 3.2 versions had this problem already.
Guess cm9 will be the future solution

  4. question: is the clockwordmod (or sumtn) recovery not needed or bootloader unlocking etc? i havent touched my tab 10.1, i dont know if i still need to unlock the bootloader or just follow your instructions.

  5. awesome!! thanks for this mate!! no need to root your device.. just follow the instructions!! been waiting for this!! cheers!! =)

  6. Oh and by the way.. to go to recovery mode, don’t hold POWER + Volume Up.. it’s “POWER + Volume DOWN”

again, cheers for this one! =)

  7. battery drain isue in idle mode, 15% drian battery over night wifi off, airplane mode on, sync off…cannot repair

  8. i flashed it back to HC 3.2, but now I realised that I did’t wipe cache and data/factory reset…could this be the probelm of battery drain in idle mode??
some people don’t have this problem

  9. The logic is so simple, if we do not want to drain the battery, we either not to use the device anymore.
WiFi Off, airplane mode Off, display off, etc. etc all Off. lol! So what’s the use of our device anyway?

  10. droid angel, I am talking about idle mode over night, I don’t want to load the battery every second even If i didn’t use the tab….

15% over night is too much, everything else in ICS is fantastic

  11. @DroidAngel
    Mr Logic !!))

Airplane mode, WiFi off, 3G off, display off -> P7500XXLQ8 still losing 1%per hour. Same settings: HC or CM9 is losing almost 0%.
    Got it?

  12. @micko and RG
I get the same battery issues since I flash the stock ROM. My tab came from AOKP ROM. So what I did was returned back to HC then re-flash the original stock kernel. Then performed a wipe data reset and flash the ICS stock again.

Battery fast draining occurred because of the different kernel I have my Tab from custom ROM since this ROM is not a full wipe version.

The important fact is that you are coming from stock HC and in this case it works fine. For everyone coming from custom ROM it will not work and you get a lot of issues!

Anyway, Airplane mode, WiFi off, 3G off, only completely NOOBS talks about it. I suggest that you have to read this whole thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1806296&page=23

  13. Oh I’m so sorry folks i should have known.. “my apology”. post updated now to warn those guys running with custom ROM. Thank’s a lot Johnny M.

  14. John M,

This NOOBS talk should help NOOBs to understand and find out if they have the same issue.

Anyway, coming from stock HC did not solve the problem.

  15. Great guide. I’ve just finished upgrading my P7500 with success. But i just realized that the rom was not rooted. Can i use the honeycomb rooting method, or do u have specific way to root this ICS?

  16. Sorry Thomas, we do not support root method here..I suggest Google may help you.
Stock ROM means – Original Firmware released by Samsung thru Kies. its unmodified, rooted or whatsoever..

  17. I have a GT-P7500 and I followed this guide. I can´t get Odin to connect. ID:COM not yellow. I tried to reinstall usb-drivers, rebooted PC after. KIES uninstalled and PC rebooted after.
I also tried on two seperate PC (Win 7) on all USB-ports. When I start the TAB in normal mode I can see it in Odin on both PC´s.

    Suggestions anyone? 🙂 Thanks!

    1. I have the same problem with connection to ODIN, but I found solution:
When TAB is in state DOWNLOADING and showing robot (after combination of power and volume down) connect TAB to computer. ODIN still can’t find TAB. Now press volume up – on screen you see warning about unknown OS. Accept warning by once again UP volume. Now ODIN find connection without any problems. I have TAB with ver. 3.2 Android.

  18. I tried following your instruction, but the pc will not detect or connect to the tab in download mode! The id COM will not highlight

    What could be the problem?

    1. Try the following:
      1. uninstall/reinstall USB driver.
      2. Check your USB cable, if its still perfectly working.
      3. Try to connect to your PC/laptop other USB port.

    1. Yes! Just remember the network APN settings, because you need to re-configure that again once getting any data connection issue after flashing.

  19. I have updated My Samsung p7500 3g Version TAB to ICS using the Italian Stock Rom. Worked like charm and looks sleek and smooth. so far so good. Thanks sooo much.

    1. This is for GT-P7500 WiFI+3G… NOT TO BE USED on Galaxy Tab GT-P7510 with WiFI only capability.

  20. To connect when starting device with power and volume down on. When downloading screen connect cable and push volume up. Then it connects to usb. Had to find this out by accident.

  21. hello
im running now on ics using the instructions above. i have a problem though with the screen lock function. it doesnt work/lock after the designated time is up. also pressing the power button doesn’t engage the tab to screen lock funtion. other features of ics no problem though. is this a glitch on the ics rom or am i just missing something.

  22. Thanks so much my friends, bought my tab in Maroco and had just french end english as option, now i have him in german and it runs very good.

  23. Thanks alot my brother ! I have done upgrade my tab successfully and running more faster and warmer !!!

  24. I just added ICS and looks fine. There are some steps not clearly explained and after couple tries I succeeded. At the moment I am doing restore of back up and will give my experience in next couple days. Until now it looks like everything is OK and works fine. Thanks a lot for your article and wish you all the best. Great display… Great widgets pages and I will enjoy next couple day investigating everything on ICS 4.0.4. Many regards to all Tab users…

  25. Regarding Odin not sensing the GT-P7500: I recall that, when I started to use Odin, it would not work on a USB 3 port (things may have changed since then, of course, but worth a mention)

    1. Repeat the process,, there must be something wrong.. Only “RFS files” takes more time..
      Hints:
remove the battery for a couple of seconds, then put it back again..
back-up all files, then perform factory reset first..
try another USB port, USB wire and USB driver
disable any anti-virus,Kies, any programs that might blocking odin tool.

  26. Is there any way to wipe it completely and start over. It stops at system.img and hold right there. I cannot get back into Honeycomb and it will not pull up on USB. This all started with using Samsung Kies and now it is screwed up. Please advise.

    1. I have no idea, how it all started when you upgrade thru Kies, since your outside Italy and this is not available in some other countries so far, except in Baltic countries, Asian countries and Austria.

I’m not sure how you updated thru kies originally (legit update or emergency update) the method you’ll be using this time (if you choose to fix thru kies) is the more or less emergency method.

Do you have this “Symptoms” when you tried updating?

      Error: ‘Recovery Mode’
‘Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select Recovery mode in Kies & try again’

Does your device before stuck Samsung logo or there’s a icon of a exclamation mark in a yellow triangle between a phone and a computer. Below it, it says” Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies.”

      Resolution steps
Disconnect your device from the PC.
      Exit the Kies software.
Launch the Kies software after it fully exited.
Click Tools at the top left of the Kies window.
      Click Firmware Upgrade and Initialization.
Remove the device from the PC.
Remove the rear cover and battery from your device.
Locate the serial number (xxxxxxx) and model number (xxxxxxxx) and enter them in the S/N and Model Name slots.

Note: The numbers are case sensitive.

Reconnect the phone to the PC.
Click OK, on the Firmware upgrade and initialization window.
Read the notification and click OK.
      Click OK, to continue.
Kies will now download the Firmware upgrade.
Read through the Caution pop-up and, if you agree, check the I have read all of the above information checkbox.
Read the allow saving of information statement and select Allow saving or Proceed without saving. firmware installation encountered a issue.
      Click Start upgrade.
Kies begins downloading the firmware emergency recovery components from Samsung servers. This will take a few minutes depending on the speed of your Internet connection.
After a few minutes, Kies begins transferring the firmware update to the device. Once the firmware upgrade completes; click OK, and then disconnect device from the PC.

Now, if all those method above doesn’t fix any issues your phone facing right now, the best way is to send it back to your dealer and demand for free fix. Explain them what really happened – that Kies screwed up your Tab.

    2. I do have the symptoms that you speak of. I follow the steps and It says “SGH-T859” Does not support initialization. I cannot get any further.

    3. Oh my goodness sir DHJ, this is not for T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 SGH-T859, this absolutely never gonna work on your Tab.. This is for the international of Tab 10.1 version with product code GT-P7500.

Here’s the solution for your problem:
Grab the official ICS firmware for your GTAB SGH-T859 here..
      T859uvlh6 t-mobile samsung galaxy tab 10.1 sgh-t859 ics 4.0.4 firmware update

and then just follow that method above, its the same process….
